ABOUT THE PROJECT
A feature length documentary-in-progress chronicling the journey of adult children caring for their aging parents with humor and honesty.
SYNOPSIS / DESCRIPTION
IT'S NOT A BURDEN follows the stories of several parents (currently ranging in age from 77 thru 96) and their adult children as they navigate the journey of growing older:
Morris, a 77 year-old charming and loveable retired Aerospace Engineer who also happens to be a hoarder, as his daughter Michelle (the film’s Director) attempts to de-clutter his home and make room for a caregiver; We'll observe sisters Maxine & Sally (and their spouses) as they care for their mother, Esther, a larger-than-life entertainer who at 95 still has a lot of laughs (and many songs) up her sleeve; 80 year-old Florence and her son Mike, an extremely energetic single-father of 12 year-old twins who has just moved next door to be closer to his Mom; 77 year-old Elaine who is residing in a board & care facility and making her way in the world with the early stages of dementia; Jack, an 87 year-old retired Grocery Store owner and his family as they help him navigate new health issues that challenge his independence and ability to oversee the family business. In addition, we will widen our scope to include several other interesting and diverse families across the country whose unique stories we'll also explore.
We'll spend at least 12 months of verité filming and chronicling, conducting comprehensive interviews with all our main subjects and the people in their lives, and scouring the archives of these families so we can include vintage photographs, home movies and ephemera. You’ll see profiles of each of our main characters so that you’ll get to know who they were in their younger years, and then join them now as their children help them navigate the next stages of their lives.
We’ll also talk to experts in the field of aging and family caregiving who will help us shed light on this experience that is affecting so many families. The goal of this film is to create an intimate look at the relationships between aging parents and the adult children who care for them, presented with humor and heart with the hope that it will bring a sense of “you’re not alone in this” to all those that connect with this very important and timely subject.
