Territories Intro

Such a seemlingly simple question. If only it had a simple answer.

Why? Because some of the work you can do on your own and some you need to do with the help of an Aggregator or Distributor. Some Aggregators and Distributors have different deals with those platforms that affect their ability to deliver to certain territories. And certain platorms do not exist in, and certain types of streaming are not possible in certain territories. Finally, some territories require a film to be rated before it can be on a certain platform.

It’s a steep learning curve, so where do you start?

Here! Through our interactive little tool below this white box…

This is basically a tool to help figure out territories on major global platforms like iTunes (AppleTV) and Amazon. Platforms like Vimeo on Demand, IndieFlix, and Altavod already allow you to avail your film globally. But it can sometimes be hard to drive traffic to platforms that take potential viewers an extra step or that are not readily available on their living room TVs. So that’s why we have made this to tool…to encompass what can be done to augment an existing North American release on major global platforms.

Please keep in mind that non-North American aggregators might have a different reach in terms of available territories. Also, even if you are doing Amazon Video Direct on your own, you can fill out this form to request additional territories be made available to you.

And on the subject of Amazon, another reminder that AVD is no longer accepting unsolicited documentary and short-form content.

Lastly, the below can be viewed and downloaded as a Google Sheets file.

Geography not your favorite subject? The Independent Film & Television Alliance (IFTA) has compiled a list of territories so you can bone up!

Things can change, so please make sure you confirm all territory availability with your aggregator or distributor.

Notes

Notes:

  1. Applies to AVD accounts created recently. If you created an AVD account several years ago, you may see a list of available territories similar to that which is offered via an Aggregator.
  2. New Zealand and South Africa require a local film classification rating.
  3. This list has varied over the years. At one point Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau did not need localization, but now do.
  4. Germany and Japan are available territories on Amazon TVOD and SVOD for all AVD account types but require localization, as do the other territories on this, but some may also require ratings in addition to localization. The reason certain territories are not listed may be due to the fact that they do not have an iTunes Movie Store in that territory. In the past, there have been occasions where the aggegator TFC uses was temporarily unable to deliver to iTunes Movie Stores in certain territories. These territories included Mexico, Brazil, Singapore and Uruguay, but some or all of the iTunes Movie Stores in these territories may no longer be rejecting submissions.
