ABOUT THE PROJECT
LOGLINE
It was The Summer of Love. But in Newark, New Jersey, there was only strife. See how one city spent 50 years trying to recover from its worst week ever. Call it a riot, a rebellion, or uprising-by any name, it was a costly tragedy that offers many lessons today.
SYNOPSIS
RIOT offers a chilling look at the long-term effects of urban conflict on a city, its people, and its neighbors. More than just a dusty history lesson, RIOT brings viewers face-to-face with not only the racism and violence of the Newark Riots, but the heartbreak that followed, and the ensuing determination of people who refused to let the riot define or defeat them. With narration by the late great Emmy-winner Andre Braugher, the film includes interviews with former Governor and Essex County Prosecutor Brendan Byrne, as well as every mayor elected in Newark since 1967, including current US Senator for New Jersey, Cory Booker. The film follows the trajectory of the city all the way through its response to the killing of George Floyd in 2020.
