LOGLINE
When a high-end photographer with a failing heart inherits a crumbling Mexico estate, she becomes the target of a gaslighting real estate scam orchestrated by her vengeful agent and a handsome drifter. In this culture-clash thriller, what’s worth more: a quick fortune or a second chance at life & love?
SYNOPSIS
When Aviva Lake (Amy Hill) visits Mexico to shoot an energy drink ad called “Culture Clash,” she checks out a casona she’s inherited from her estranged and recently deceased husband. Real estate agent Raven Johnson (Yolonda Ross) moved to Mérida when swindling deals on big mansions was easy, and so she did many suspect transactions with Aviva’s ex, “Charly” Cervantes, who was quite a character. In fact, he double crossed Raven big time.
But Aviva has come to town with her own news: she’s struggling with a heart condition that has her questioning her whole life. Raven harbors secret designs on using proceeds from “Casita Galore” to settle her score with Charly, and she not only stands to make bank when it sells, but she also slips in a clause that makes her the beneficiary if and when Aviva’s condition worsens. Enter Maximón Muñoz (Miguel Angel Loret), a handsome drifter with an ambitious girlfriend Jilda Henriquez (Andrea Arenas), hired by Raven. The idea is that he seduces Aviva into letting him and his “siblings” run the household while she considers staying on to live out her days.
In a plan they call “Let’s Scare Aviva to Death,” he’s really been charged with making Aviva think it’s haunted, so she sells quick. But a twist: could Casita Galore actually be haunted? Are the spirits angry because Charly died on the property playing too fast and loose with forces underground? Could more be at risk than real estate?
Dedicated to the memory of classic cinema producers Val Lewton (who created the genre of psychological suspense thrillers) and Ross Hunter (whose technicolor melodramas were the precursor to the popular telenovela form), Culture Clash is indeed the theme, as the ex-pats and locals vie for control against the complicated backdrop of the Yucatán.
