RTL’s Dutch SVOD service Videoland to add commercials

September 1, 2019

RTL Nederland is planning to add a cheaper tier to its SVOD service Videoland.

Talking to Dutch newspaper De Volkrant CEO Sven Sauvé said Videoland will launch a new, lower priced subscription plan carrying a limited number of commercials. A regular subscription to the service costs €8.99 a month, the advertising-supported model will costs “less than Disney+” (which will launch at €6.99).

Sauvé also said that Videoland now has well over 600,000 subscribers, making it the second most popular SVOD platform in the country, after Netflix.

In order to boost home-grown product he is also launching the Videoland Academy in order to support young Dutch filmmakers. With an annual budget of €1 million, he hopes to produce four 45-minute fiction movies as well as some documentaries.
