ABOUT THE PROJECT
HALF A LIFE (VR) is an animated, interactive Virtual Reality (VR) documentary that journeys into an Egyptian lesbian couple’s search for asylum and acceptance in the Netherlands.
SYNOPSIS / DESCRIPTION
In a world divided by the media, politics, and social conflict, HALF A LIFE (VR) is an animated, VR journey into an Egyptian lesbian couple’s search for asylum and acceptance in the Netherlands.
In their own words a young Egyptian lesbian couple tells their own, true story in HALF A LIFE (VR). Having been together for nearly 10 years, they were forced to flee their home in Cairo in 2016 to the Netherlands. One of them faced a forced marriage to a male cousin as a second wife, and both women feared their families’ reactions and for their own safety should they protest it.
In the vein of successful animated documentaries like WALTZ WITH BASHIR, PERSEPOLIS and THEGREEN WAVE, HALF A LIFE (VR) pushes the envelope by taking the genre into VR. Using Oculus toaccess a story world built on stylized 3D, 2D animation and Quill, audiences will hear the women’s voicesintimately as their two intertwining testimonies unfold. Audiences will navigate their shared story in first person, experiencing and switching between the two women’s views of the world as their own andstepping into, rather than simply observing their experience as in a traditional film.
